ARE YOU A SERVANT

May 31.

Choose you this day whom ye will serve. Joshua 24:15

In our natural body no one wants to be a servant, it is demeaning and disrespectful in the eyes of ordinary men. We feel humiliated when called to serve others, yet our Lord Jesus Christ who was divine accepted to come in the human body to serve and not to be served and to even die for us while serving us.

We have to be completely emptied out of self to be able to be a servant in service to others and especially unto the Lord. We must die to self; the spirit of pride must be nailed daily to the cross we carry so we can have the ability to serve others in and outside of God’s vineyard.

How difficult it is to serve others, to remove our clothes, tie a towel around our waist and wash the feet of our friends, our Lord Jesus Christ did it for those he already knew were going to betray him, deny him and disown him, they ran away soon after. These are his disciples like us who He spent a lot of time teaching the truth, mere mortals he stooped to serve. This level of humility justifies why Christians as His followers should be humble and ever ready to serve others.

Make me a servant…Who do we wish to serve? Why do we want to serve him? Are we serving God or idols? We cannot serve our God and mammons at the same time.

Choose ye who you will serve today was a cry from Joshua to the Israelites and our cry today. They were torn between serving the true God or serving the false gods.

There is a reward for being a faithful servant. A servant is expected to know his Master and to be committed to him. There are many distractions, things that would make a servant to be less committed to his Master, material things, money, family and friends. A servant must put away other idols and addictions to be able to follow God’s commands wholeheartedly in obedience. Are you that servant? Ready to leave father, mother, wife, children and all to follow God and to serve him diligently. The young man had offered to follow our Lord Jesus Christ but he could not leave his riches to follow Him. Are we serving material things or God?

For even the Son of man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many-Mark 10:45

Our Lord Jesus Christ served sinners (in the eyes of the world) with his divine presence by sitting at table with them.

And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant, all these are our Lord Jesus Christ teaching us how to be faithful servants in his kingdom.

In the Bible when the Prodigal Son came to himself, he offered to be a servant in his father’s household. Have we ever gotten to the point of wanting to return to our Lord Jesus Christ and offer to be his servant? When we walk away from the splendour of his kingdom, we eat the food that cannot sustain us and we hunger for food from our Father’s table. We must today choose who we will serve and we must be faithful servants.

Let Us Pray: We are grateful to you our Lord Jesus Christ who came in flesh as a Servant King. You have called us and we will follow you in servitude to you. We pray in Jesus’s name. Amen
